In its efforts to reduce the UK's dependence on mainly imported fossil fuels the Government have introduced a number of incentives to promote the use of renewable energy sources. The initiative applicable to Photo Voltaic (PV) Solar Panels is the Feed In Tariff (FIT) introduced in 2010.
Under the FIT scheme you are paid for every unit of electricity generated (kilo Watt hour (kWh)) by the Solar Panels whether you use it your self or export it back to the electricity utility. In addition for every unit exported you receive an additional payment. These payments are in addition to the savings made by the reduction in electricity you buy from the electricity utility.
Both the generation income and the export income are fixed at the time of installation and index linked for a period of 25 years and tax free. Together the increased savings from the inevitable rise in the price of electricity the return is usually far superior and more certain than other options.
The FIT rates do change and AGS will advise you as to the rates currentlyapplicable.
The amount of electricity generated by the Solar Panels depends on the number and type of panels installed and their location.
PV installations are rated at their peak potential output in kilowatts (kWp).
Statistics published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change indicate that the average consumer uses 3000 to 5000 kWh per year, the potential for savings are substantial.
